Donavon Frankenreiter começou a tocar em Peanut Butter and Jam, com a idade de 18 anos. Em 1996 ele começou a sério a carreira musical quando ele formou a banda Sunchild. Na Sunchild, Frankenreiter foi gitarrista, mas não cantava. A banda tinha um som 70s rock similar ao estilo The Black Crowes. Eles lançaram seu primeiro CD, Barefoot & Live, na Surfdog Records em 1997.
